Your financial statements follow GAAP (accrual accounting) recording revenue when earned and expenses when incurred to maintain an accurate picture of business performance for lenders, investors, and internal decisions. Your taxes, meanwhile, can be filed on a cash basis, recognizing income when it's actually received and expenses when they're actually paid. GAAP shows how the business is really doing, while cash basis often defers taxable income and lowers your current tax bill.
